Louisiana · What a car really costs

Buying a car in Louisiana.

Louisiana charges sales and use tax (state plus parish/municipal) of 5% at the state level, and local jurisdictions add their own, which brings a typical vehicle to about 10%. A trade-in does reduce the taxable price, which is real money on the deal.

How the tax works.

State rate rose from 4.45% to 5% on January 1, 2025 (Act 11 of 2024 3rd Extraordinary Session) and is scheduled to fall to 4.75% in 2030.

Local tax on a vehicle is collected by OMV at the parish/municipal rate of the buyer's domicile, not the dealer's location. Per the OMV parish rate data: Orleans Parish 5.0%, Jefferson Parish 4.75%, Baton Rouge 5.5%, Shreveport 4.6%-5.25%, Lake Charles 5.75%; the median domicile is 5.25%. Economic development districts can reach 8.5%; 7.75% is the highest ordinary municipal/parish combination.

Manufacturer rebates are included in the taxable sales price in Louisiana; dealer discounts reduce it.

Trade-ins: Trade-in allowance on a motor vehicle taken in trade reduces the taxable sales price (R.S. 47:301(13)).
