How the tax works.

The county treasurer collects the higher of the rate where the sale was made and the rate at the vehicle's registration address (Publication KS-1526), so the buyer effectively pays the registration-address rate.

Manufacturer rebates paid directly to the dealer and shown on the bill of sale are exempt from tax since July 1, 2018.

Typical local of 2.5% reflects the Johnson County suburbs (Overland Park 9.1% combined) and Wichita/Sedgwick County (7.5%); community improvement districts push some addresses above 11%.

Trade-ins: Trade-in allowance for a motor vehicle or trailer reduces the taxable selling price (K.S.A. 79-3602).
