When do I pay registration?

Buying from a dealership, the first registration is part of the deal: the dealer collects the title and registration fees at signing, files the paperwork with the state, and sends you home on a temporary plate while the permanent one processes. After that, registration renewal becomes your annual responsibility.

At purchase.

Every year after.

Don't ignore the renewal date: driving on expired registration risks a ticket, and late fees stack. Most states let you set up online reminders in a minute.

Quick answers.

Does the dealer really handle the DMV paperwork?

For the initial title and registration on a dealer sale, yes, that is standard, and it is part of what the doc fee pays for. Private-party buyers do the DMV visit themselves.

What if my permanent plates don't arrive before the temp expires?

Contact the dealer first; they can trace the filing and states can extend temporary permits. Keep the paperwork in the car in the meantime.

Is registration the same as the annual vehicle tax?

They travel together but are different lines: the registration fee is a flat administrative charge, while AZ's VLT and NV's GST are value-based taxes collected with registration. Our city guides show both for your area.
