After that, registration renewal becomes your annual responsibility.

- Title fee, registration fee, and any state plate fees appear as line items on your buyer's order, collected at signing and payable in cash or financed with the deal.
- The temporary plate or permit in your window covers you legally (commonly 30 to 90 days depending on state) while the state processes the title and mails plates or tabs.

- Renewal notices come from the state (mail or email) before your registration month; you pay online, by mail, or in person, and get a new tab or card.
- The value-based portion declines as the car ages in AZ and NV, so renewals get cheaper over the years for the same car.
- Some states and counties add emissions testing to renewal: metro Phoenix and Tucson, and the Las Vegas and Reno areas, require periodic tests for many vehicles; requirements vary by vehicle age and fuel type.
- Moving states restarts the process: you generally must title and register in your new state within a set window (often 30 to 60 days) and its fee system takes over.
Don't ignore the renewal date: driving on expired registration risks a ticket, and late fees stack. Most states let you set up online reminders in a minute.

Does the dealer really handle the DMV paperwork?
For the initial title and registration on a dealer sale, yes, that is standard, and it is part of what the doc fee pays for. Private-party buyers do the DMV visit themselves.
What if my permanent plates don't arrive before the temp expires?
Contact the dealer first; they can trace the filing and states can extend temporary permits. Keep the paperwork in the car in the meantime.
Is registration the same as the annual vehicle tax?
