Coupe vs sedan?

Classically, a coupe is a two-door car with a fixed roof and a close-set cabin, and a sedan is a four-door with a full-height rear roofline. Simple, until automakers, led by Mercedes-Benz, started using 'coupe' to describe a roofline rather than a door count. Here is the traditional answer and the modern asterisk.

How Mercedes-Benz uses the word.

At Mercedes-Benz, 'coupe' describes a shape more than a door count. When the badge lands on a four-door car like the CLA or on SUVs like the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe, it means the roofline: instead of a squared-off rear roof, the roof arcs down toward the tail in one continuous fastback sweep, a classic coupe silhouette stretched over a practical body. Mercedes effectively invented the category with the 2004 CLS, the original four-door coupe, and the idea stuck because it sells emotion: a sleeker car that still has back doors.

The trade-off is real: that plunging roof costs rear headroom and cargo space, and coupe versions typically price above the equivalent sedan or SUV they are based on.

Shopping tip: count the doors yourself. At Mercedes, only the CLE Coupe and AMG GT Coupe are coupes in the traditional two-door sense; everything else wearing the badge is a sedan or SUV in a sportier suit, with the headroom and cargo trade-offs that implies.
